Doris Deane Lacey's Obituary
Doris D. Lacey went to her Lord on Wednesday, May 18, 2016, surrounded by her family at her daughter’s home near Buffalo, Kansas. She was born December 1, 1931 in Erie, Kansas, to Carl and Elma (Mitchell) Hazen.
On July 29, 1951, she married Glen Lacey at Kimball, Kansas and they made their home in Chanute, Kansas.
Doris had many accomplishments in life. She was raised on a farm in Stark, Kansas, learning what hard work was all about. She put herself through college at Pittsburg State University, belonging to Kappa Delta Pi. She taught school at various country schools and at Murry Hill School in Chanute, KS. She always told the story of riding her horse to school and racing the school bus – always winning. After the adoption of her girls Judy and Linda, she stopped teaching and stayed home to raise her daughters and to tutor children at her home. In the early sixties, Doris and her husband, Glen, worked side by side, building a successful business in Chanute as Lacey’s Carpet Sales until Glen’s death in 1990. After Glen’s life ended, she and her close friend, Joan Wilson, traveled and took many in-country trips, always stopping at every fabric and sewing shop. They worked hard in front of their sewing machines, making items for her church and various missions. Doris was also instrumental in starting the area Hospice organizations, serving as Volunteer Coordinator, church food pantry, and Utility Fund. She volunteered at the Cherry Street Youth Center and also was very active in various women’s groups and in Ministerial Alliance. She loved to cook and always had something coming out of the oven when anyone came to visit her home in Chanute. Her church and her family were very important to her, always spreading love and the gift of giving to everyone with the Lord always coming first.
Survivors include daughter Judy Eaton and husband Robert; brother Leon Hazen and wife Janice; 5 grandchildren: Nicholas and Christopher Crownover, Darren and Dustin Venneman, Sierra Eaton, and 8 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Glen Lacey, and a daughter, Linda Vennerman.
