Dr. Larry Lamont (Monty) McCune's Obituary
Larry Lamont McCune, D.D.S., 86, passed away on January 16, 2018, at NMRMC in Chanute. He was born in Chanute, Kansas, on November 3, 1931, to Vernon and Vivian (Blakely) McCune. He graduated from Chanute High School in 1949, Chanute Junior College in 1951, and Washington University Dental School, St. Louis, Missouri, in 1955. During his senior year of dental school, Larry worked two evenings a week at McConnell Aircraft, St. Louis, manning the first-aid station. He also worked part-time at Pine Lawn Bank and Trust as a teller. He married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Neptune, on June 15, 1952, in Chanute.
Monty joined the naval reserve as an ensign in 1953 and moved to San Diego in 1955 on active duty as lieutenant in the Navy Dental Corps stationed at Marine Recruit Depot. He was released from active duty in 1957. He served in the United States Navy Reserves until 1967. He served two weeks of active duty on a submarine off Key West, Florida, and on an aircraft carrier out of San Francisco, California. He was honorably discharged as lieutenant commander. He was proud of his service in the U.S. Navy.
Monty set up his private dental practice in Chanute in 1957 and retired from dentistry in 1998. In 2000 he was employed at Cardinal Drug Store, in charge of durable medical equipment and data entry until December 2014. He was a long-time member of Westview Southern Baptist Church, serving as deacon, treasurer, and other capacities. Music was one of his many hobbies, singing in church choir and community choirs. He played clarinet and saxophone in numerous community theater productions, both in Chanute and in Iola.
Monty is survived by his wife, of the home, daughters Sandy and husband Rob Phillips, Chanute, and Sharon and husband Dr. David Byers, Lee's Summit, Missouri, grandchildren Dr. David McCune and wife Dr. Lori McCune, Kansas City, Missouri, Dr. Diane Allen and husband Charles, Dallas, Texas, Nathan Byers and wife Sarah, Ft. Collins, Colorado, Preston Byers, Godfrey, Illinois, Molly Byers, Lee's Summit, Missouri, Eric and Evan Phillips, Chanute, great-grandchildren Annalise and Kieran McCune, Kansas City, Missouri, daughter-in-law Carolyn McCune, Dallas, Texas, sister, Martha Arnold, Boerne, Texas, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Mark McCune, a sister, Mary Miller, and a brother, Marlin McCune.
A visitation will be held on Friday, January 19, 2018 from 6-8 p.m. at Countryside Funeral Home – Johnson Chapel 101 N. Highland, Chanute, KS. A memorial service will be on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 1 p.m. at Westview Southern Baptist Church in Chanute. A private family graveside will be held at an earlier date.
