Rev. Eugene Victor Solomon's Obituary
Eugene Victor Solomon was born January 5, 1922 in rural Rose, Kansas, Woodson County. He died July 26, 2016 in Chanute, KS at age 94. He started Mound Valley grade school in Woodson County at age 5 and graduated from eighth grade in 1935. He graduated from Humboldt High School in 1941.
At age 22 he was the non-commissioned officer with eight technicians under him in charge of the lab for the 500 bed army hospital on Guadalcanal. He went to Guam in June 1945 and arrived back in Kansas on December 19, 1945.
He married Anna Virginia Carlson on June 15, 1947 at the Center Ridge Evangelical United Brethren Church.
He graduated from Southwestern State College in Weatherford, Oklahoma in 1949. He had attended one semester at Western Union, Le Mars, Iowa in 1941 and one semester at Chanute Junior College in 1946. He graduated from Bonebrake Theological Seminary, Dayton, Ohio in 1951. During seminary, he worked at The McLean Book Store.
He was a full member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church conference and the United Methodist Church Conference (Kansas West and Kansas East). Eugene was a pastor for 33 years. He served churches in Oklahoma: Weatherford and Mount Zion and in Kansas: Mizpah-Industry, Great Bend, La Crosse, Jetmore-Hanston, Eskridge-Harveyville and Baxter Springs – Blue Mound.
Eugene and Virginia moved to Chanute for their retirement years.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia, two daughters, Meredith Collins of Chanute, KS and Anita Christensen and husband James of Mesa, AZ; four grandchildren: Leslie Collins, David Collins, Anna Christensen and Tara Christensen.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Edna May Brown Solomon; two sisters: Margaret Solomon and Edith Solomon; two brothers: Arthur Solomon and Virgil Solomon; grandson Canyon Ross Collins; and son-in-law: Brett Collins.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, July 30, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Chanute. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Chanute.
