Letha Marie Myers' Obituary
Letha Marie (Coble) Myers age 72, passed away peacefully on Nov. 25, 2014 at her home in Chanute, KS. Letha was born on March 18, 1942 in Springfield, MO; the daughter of Lloyd and Safrona (Busby) Coble. Safrona and Lloyd eventually divorced and Orval Marler became Letha’s step-father and one of her main caretakers when she was young.
Letha was a hard working intelligent business woman that loved adventure. She married Lewis Myers on May 26, 1965 in Miami, OK. They had an instant family, with her came three little boys, all whom were later adopted by Lewis, and in 1966 their youngest child was born.
They established their home on a small farm West of Chanute where they made a living raising hogs and row crop farming. In 1972 they purchased the Orchid Buffet where they made many friends and influenced the lives of countless young people in the Chanute community all the while still running their farming operation. In 1981 they retired from the restaurant business, but continued to manage their rental properties and the farming operation.
In their spare time after retirement from the restaurant business they enjoyed sailing and riding bicycles. They soon purchased a sea worthy sailboat that touted the ability to roll a complete 360 degrees, but to their dismay they never got to test its credibility. The bicycle adventure started out very modest. It was only intended to help Lewis move his farming equipment from one location to another. He would simply throw a mountain bike on the back of his pickup and take off for the field and then ride back home to get his tractor or combine.
Soon, Letha began riding and they rode their bikes to town each morning for breakfast; this passion continued to grow until they were riding hundreds of miles. As the miles stacked up their quest for adventure grew, they were riding for charity as well as pure enjoyment. They took their bikes to Hawaii and toured the big island for a month, living in a tent in parks and on the beach. They also had many stories to tell about their trip across Kansas with the Bike Across Kansas tour in 1990.
On one adventure they combined their love of the water with their passion for bicycling setting off from Atchison, Kansas to Sioux City, Iowa on the Missouri River aboard their private pontoon boat. Each night they would dock and ride their bikes into the local town to purchase gasoline for the boat and to buy groceries for the next day’s travels. Unfortunately, her adventures were cut short by the untimely death of her husband Lewis.
Letha will always be remembered as a strong woman with a passion for life never afraid to jump in, roll up her sleeves, and do what needed to be done.
Letha Marie Myers was preceded in death by her parents Lloyd and Safrona, her step-father Orval Marler, brother Lloyd Coble, her son David, and daughter-in-law Lynette Meyers.
