Loren Wayne Hawley's Obituary
Loren Wayne Hawley; faithful Christian, beloved husband, father, grandfather and avid horseman passed peacefully on March 16, 2020 with his family by his side. Loren was cared for and adored by his staff at Pittsburg Care and Rehab while he battled Alzheimer’s for the last several years. His sweet disposition never faltered.
Loren Wayne, 89, a long-time resident of Fredonia, Kansas was born on February 7th, 1931 in Humboldt, Kansas to Milton Marion and Gracie Mildred (Thompson) Hawley. He joined brothers Marion, Cecil, Charles, and sisters Ruby and Norma Jean, who all preceded him in death.
Loren attended school in Toronto, Kansas from where he graduated and later he served 2 years in the Army as a medic in Germany. Upon his return he made marriage arrangements with Carol Sue Purkeypile of Eureka, Kansas, who survives in the home, with their dog, Tiki. On November 21st, 1954 they drove to Coffeyville, Kansas for a simple wedding and began their life together. Loren was a loyal employee at Lafarge where he worked 40 years as a laborer to support his growing family.
Loren and Carol would welcome four children into the world; Brenda Coburn (Randy) of Harrisonville, Missouri, Rick Hawley (Cathy) of Park City, Kansas, Cindy Hawley of Fredonia and Kathy Young (Paul) of Irrigon, Oregon.
Loren loved his children, his many grandchildren, and a few great grandchildren. He very much enjoyed family reunions, visiting with his nephews and his nieces in California, and he had a very special bond with his horses, especially Bandit.
Loren was a life-long, active member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. He was also a member of the American Quarter horse Association. He prayed hard, worked hard, and loved hard. Loren devoted his life to leading people to follow Jesus. He was Christ-like in his everyday life and faithfully studied God’s word. Loren was determined to teach young 4-H members to become better horsemen. He spent countless hours in the round pen training horses, helping kids perfect their technique and learn how to care for horses. And he didn’t go a day without dipping some bread in his famous peanut butter special!
Unfortunately, the celebration of Loren’s life is postponed due to current circumstances. Pastor Francois Erasmus will officiate. A family inurnment will take place at Eureka Cemetery.
We please ask in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Fredonia Seventh Day Adventist Building Fund. Donations and/or condolences may be offered to Cindy Hawley 350 West Mound Road Fredonia, Kansas 66736.
