Muriel L Cody's Obituary
Muriel L. Cody, age 92, a longtime resident of rural Longton, Kansas passed away Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at the Howard Twilight Manor in Howard, Kansas. She was born on November 12, 1921 in Shattuck, Oklahoma the daughter of Charles and Lenora (Furman) Jontra. Muriel was salutatorian of her graduating class at Howard High School.
During World War II, Muriel moved to California and worked in department store, she later moved back to Howard and worked for the phone company. On January 7, 1947, Muriel was united in marriage to Kelsey Cody in Independence, Kansas. They would make their home in rural Longton where she was a homemaker. In 1977, Muriel was chosen Extension Homemaker of the Year. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, canning and spending time with her family.
Muriel is survived by her husband Kelsey Cody of the home, one son Ken Cody of Longton; one daughter Linnae Cody of Liberty, Kansas; and one granddaughter Kendra Murphy of Hannibal, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Weltha Wells; Theresa Sims; Letha Hebb; and Edith Sanders; brothers, Cletus Jontra; Ernest Jontra; Charles Jontra; Stanley Jontra; Ross Jontra; and Elmer Jontra.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at Countryside Funeral Home in Howard with interment to follow at the Longton Cemetery. There is no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association and may be left with the funeral home. Online condolences may be left at www.countysidefh.com.
