Patricia Carol Elrod's Obituary
Patricia Carol Elrod, age 75, of Chanute, passed away Saturday, July 26, 2014 at K.U. Medical Center in Kansas City. Patty was born on Christmas Day on December 25, 1938 in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of George R. and Dorothy L. (Barlow) Shepherd. She was raised on the Vaudeville Circuit as her parents were professional dancers. She traveled all over the United States with the company of many movie stars that were billed at the same clubs her parents danced at.
She later attended schools in Kansas City, MO., Corcoran, CA., and Mission, KS., where she graduated from Shawnee-Mission High School with the class of 1956. She was a Head-Majorette and performed in many School Dance Theater Programs as well as on some television programs.
She taught dancing at her mother’s Dance Studio, for many years at Shepherds Dance Studio in California and Mission, KS. After graduating she married C. Wayne Horton and was divorced after 13 years with 2 boys, Terry Dale Horton and wife Debbie of Liberty, MO., and Jeffrey Roland Horton and wife Traci, of Belleville, IL. She remarried in 1969 to Darold L. Elrod who is a State Farm Agent and they had one child, Kevin Scott Elrod of Pittsburg, KS. She also has two step-children, Lisa L. Schmidt and husband Kevin of Eugene, OR., and Kurtis L. Elrod of Riverside, CA. She worked many years with the State Farm Company in her husband’s office and semi-retired.
Being an only child Patty was preceded in death by both her parents.
She is survived by her husband, Darold L. Elrod, sons; Terry and Jeff Horton, and Kevin Elrod, step-children; Lisa Schmidt and Kurtis Elrod and 12 grandchildren and, 1 great-grandchild.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 30, 2014, 6-8 p.m. at Countryside Funeral Home-Gibson Chapel. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, July 31, 2014 at 9:00 a.m. at Gibson Chapel. Interment will take place at Park Lawn Cemetery in Kansas City Missouri at 2:00 p.m., following services.
Family requests memorials to Reachout Christian Church of Chanute and may be left with or mailed to the funeral home. Countryside Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
