Nearly six years ago, I was mowing my lawn when I saw my neighbor from across the alley, whom I hadn’t yet met, walking towards me with tomatoes in hand. That day turned out to be a very special one for me as it began a cherished friendship. Virginia was one-of-a-kind. She had a great sense of humor and a big heart. She constantly shared things – books, newspapers, Halloween decorations, the Olympics (I didn’t have television). I loved visiting with her, especially listening to her stories and reminiscences (the white squirrels and the painting of the mistaken house are two of my favorites). It was a comfort to know I had a neighbor looking out for me. Oftentimes, Virginia would shake her head and tell me I stayed up too late. She was always trying to figure out what I was up to in my yard; usually when I told her what I was doing, she would shake her head some more and mutter, “I don’t know about that girl . . . ”
Although I have not met many of you, I have heard so much about you. Please accept my condolences during this time of loss. Virginia was a wonderful neighbor and lady. She will be missed.
